Booker Trenton Yopp Jr. was born on January 23, 1932 to the late Booker and Delorious Yopp Sr. in Tampa, FL. He resided in the Tampa area until the age of 18.
In July 1950 he joined the United States Army and served valiantly through the Korean Conflict. During his tenure in the Army he was awarded the Purple Heart for injuries sustained during combat. He separated from the US Army in 1956 with an Honorable Discharge. In December 1958 he joined the US Air Force serving as a Medical Administrative Specialist. He retired from the Air Force Honorably as a Staff Sergeant. During his military service he received numerous awards and accolades for dedicated service to his country
After military service being the type of man he was he owned and operated a Lock & Key Shop in New Jersey, he also worked for Navy Public Works in Oakland, CA and as a Civil Service Worker (Transportation Coordinator) in Concord, CA. He moved from California to Jacksonville, FL in 1997 and was employed by the City of Jacksonville as the Senior Center Transportation Coordinator. He also owned and operated Booker T’s Thrift Store and Yopp Trucking.
He loved to travel and his favorite travel spot was Portugal. His favorite hobby was bowling and it gave him the opportunity to travel all across the United States bowling in tournaments. In his years of bowling he achieved the perfect “300”game at least 6 times. He was an avid reader, enjoyed crossword puzzles and occasionally golfing. His idle time was spent shopping for trinkets and gadgets. He was considered the consummate “Handy Man”. He enjoyed life and lived his 87 years to the fullest.
He was affiliated with the Veteran’s Of Foreign Wars, The American Legion , The National Assn of Retired Civil Service Workers, The United States Bowling Conference, The National Bowling Assn, Jax Gator City Senate of The TNBA, Christ Open Door Community Church and Founding President of Platinum Bowling Group.
In May 2001 he married the love of his life Carroll Lewis-Smith and together for 18 years they bowled, traveled and enjoyed his senior years. Their devotion to each other was quite evident as she sat at his side on March 26, 2019 as he stepped from time to eternity.
He was preceded in death by his parent and siblings Ricardo, Connell, Ronaldo, Celsus, Nazarene and Cynthia. He leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife Carroll Yopp. Children – Michael (Winifred) Favors, Timothy Donald, Corey (Elisa) Donald, Deborah Maina, and Carolyn Alexander. 18 Grandchildren and 17 Great-grandchildren. Brother – Julio (Brenda) Yopp. Sisters-In-Law – Marie Yopp, Cora Yopp, Peggy Howard and Hazel Marshall. Brothers-In-Law – Joseph Gates and Corinthian Gates. God Children/Care Givers – Craig Coss, Mark Howard, Betsy Holton, Diana Cruz-Moore, Rev. Demetrius (Vashti)Cole, Alfonzo Harris, Dr. Timothy Rose, Gratavious Blake, Tammy (Christopher)Fields-Bailey. Special friends - Dorothy Jefferson, Nathan Brewer, Howard & Collette Carr and Kenneth Yates. A host of nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends.
