Lurlene McKinney Obituary

Lurlene McKinney, affectionately known as Ms. Laura, daughter of the late James E. McKinney, Sr. & Georgia Mae Green McKinney, was born on September 18, 1959 in Jacksonville, Florida.

Ms. Laura received her education from Duval County Public Schools and was a graduate of New Stanton Senior High School, Class of 1977.  At an early age, she accepted Christ as her personal Lord & Savior. Her motto was live a life that honors God! Her life was a living example of her favorite Bible verse, Ephesians 4:32 — “And be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving one another, just as God also forgave you in Christ.”

As a born athlete, Ms. Laura was an avid sports fan and played softball for many years starting at Simonds-Johnson Park forming a sisterhood of athletic women in the city of Jacksonville. She was the captain of the Tomboys softball team later changing the team's name to the Diamond Girls. Ms. Laura consistently and effectively led the team to numerous local, state and national championships.

For the past 14 years, Ms. Laura was a faithful, passionate and dedicated employee of Publix Super Market (Dunn Avenue, Gateway and Merrill Road locations). She was known for her infectious smile, her kind and compassionate spirit. What she appreciated most about her career at Publix, was serving the community and the endless amount of people she encountered on a daily basis.

On Sunday, May 17, Ms. Laura peacefully received her heavenly wings. As she's now resting in the bosom of our Lord & Savior, her presence will be immensely missed.

Ms. Laura was preceded in death by her beloved parents Mr. & Mrs. James E. McKinney, Sr.; brothers, John and Robert Earl McKinney; sister, Margaret Ann McKinney.

She leaves to cherish her sweet memories a loving family; two daughters, Titika McKinney Hill and Iris Monique McKinney; two grandchildren which were her pride and joy, Kennedy J. Hill and Christian J. Taggart; Brother, James McKinney, Jr.; two sisters, Annette Martin (Calvin, Jr.), her twin/best friend, Geraldine (Jerrie) McKinney; one sister-in-law, LaVerne McKinney. Special friends/coworkers Barbara Jean Watson and Jessica Palmer-Railey, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins as well as many sorrowful friends.
