Walter Cuthbert, Sr. Obituary

Chief Warrant Officer Walter K. Cuthbert, Sr. was born on September 20, 1955 in Beaufort, South Carolina.

He attended Beaufort High School, class of 1973. After graduating, he enlisted in the United States Army in 1973, enrolled in flight school and became a maintenance test pilot where he flew the EH-60 and UH-60 series Blackhawks. Walter served as a supervisor and manager and supported Operation Desert Storm by providing mission-ready helicopters. He then retired in 1993.

On December 8, 1988, Walter married Betty Kenner, and from this union they raised four girls and one boy. He could be heard complaining often about being overrun in a house full of girls. As the years went on, he got no relief, as he was blessed with six granddaughters who loved him dearly.

After retiring from the Army, Walter began a lucrative career in car sales before returning to his passion as a test pilot for another 19 years with the Army Aviation Helicopter Training Facility Center in Fort Rucker, Alabama.

Walter enjoyed spending time with family, grilling his specialty meats, seafood boils, talking about his time in the air, and watching football. One of his favorite NFL teams was the Minnesota Vikings.

Walter departed this life on January 3, 2023, in Jacksonville, Florida.

He leaves to cherish his memory a loving and devoted family: wife, Betty Cuthbert of Jacksonville, FL; parents, Arabell and James Hill of Jacksonville, FL; Special relative, Doris Johnson; stepmother, Josephine Mungin (Walter-deceased) of New York; children, Walter Cuthbert, Jr. of Oak Grove, Kentucky; Kristy Day (Michael), Emily Roberts (Devin), Shawna Butler (Jermal), and Marissa Cuthbert all of Jacksonville, FL; brothers, Rodney Hill (Birgit) of Ludwigsburg, Germany, Darrell Hill of Jacksonville, FL and Michael Mungin of New Jersey; sister, Pam Mungin of New York; grandchildren, Madison Day, Jocelyn Day, Jernee Butler, Makayla Butler, Jayda Roberts, and Makenzie Butler; special friends, Buster Munson and Ken Holmes; a host of  aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends.
